Spin off oil filter conversion for VA
Advantages
- easy access to replacement filters
- high quality modern filter material
- easy to fit
- residual oil pressure valve ensures no wear on start-up
' I have finally got round to fitting this conversion. It was very straightforward to do and all gaskets and bolts were there ready to use. The only adaptation I had to make was to realign the oil pressure feed braided hose coupling on the firewall slightly so it allows a cleaner fit on the new adapter. Oil pressure was pretty much instant - I'll check this out tomorrow to see if there's any change after a night's rest. Update - has worked perfectly for at least 5 years'
Mick Pay has these for sale at £65 plus postage. The kit includes all gaskets, oil filter, bolts and spring washers needed. You will need to contact him direct at mg188[at]btinternet.com - just replace the bracketed bit with the normal email @ and I'm sure he'll be able to quote for you
He has conversions for both oil pressure feeds, off the top of the oil filter (like mine) or if your oil pressure feed is off the top banjo by the rocker cover. To be able to buy and fit a much cheaper and efficient oil filter seems to be a good reason to use this.
In addition to this, it seems the K & N PS- 7037 filter fits the existing housing, but I don't think it has the non-return valve present on cartridge-type spin on filters
Which oils and filter
Modern oils are not best fit for an old MG so the tendency is to go for Castrol Classic or Comma 20W50 along with a modern filter if not adapted as above. These are available from Amazon and are K & N PS 7037
Always use a mineral oil
I now use Valvoline VR1 20/50 mineral which is available in good old fashioned 5 litre (1 gallon +) containers and is a good price if bought on line in multipacks.
It is popular oil with the vintage racing fraternity and holds up well under stress in older engines.
Use the cheapest 20/50 you can find for running in - to help the rings bed in.
